To prevent and mitigate the effect of flood in the state, the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency, KADSEMA has constituted a flood prone areas assessment adhoc team.
The team which consist of state actors from the National Emergency Management Agency, KASUPDA, KADGIS, KEPA, Red Cross and the ministry of environment, is saddled with the responsibility of assessing the status of the flood prone areas for effective planning and implementation.
Speaking on the need for the assessment, the Executive Secretary of the Kaduna state Emergency Management Agency KADSEMA, Dr Usman Hayatu Mazadu, explained that the assessment will help the agency to effectively mitigate the predicted flood in the state by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency.
He said based on reports from relevant stakeholders, about 708 identified structures were erected in the flood prone areas of the state, emphasising that the agency will do everything possible to minimize the effects of flood in the state to the bearest minimum.
Dr Mazadu called on resident of the state to shun the habit of indiscriminate dumping of refuse on drainage systems to prevent the bane of flooding.
Speaking shortly after the tour of the flood prone areas within the Kaduna metropolis, the team lead and Head of Disaster Risk Reduction Unit, KADSEMA, Malam Hussaini Abdullahi, said the move is part of the agency's proactive measures to reduce the impact of flood in the state.
He urged residents of the state to adhere to the laid down procedures for developing any landed property by following through the appropriate channels in order not to build on drainage systems and the flood prone areas.
The flood assessment team visited Rafin guza, Kigo road in Kabala Costain, Bashama road in Tudun Wada, Ramat road in Unguwan Rimi and Unguwan dosa by Malali road.
