FG inaugurates committee to address social vices

The Federal Government has inaugurated a committee in Abuja to campaign against social vices in tertiary institutions.

The committee is to combat social vices like drug abuse, cultism, cybercrime, sexual harassment, and academic dishonesty among others.

This was as the committee said it would propose the immediate installation of closed-circuit television cameras in and around all secondary schools and tertiary institutions in the country.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu, tasked the committee to devise new strategies in the campaign against vices and collaborate with local and foreign partners for support.

In his remarks, the Senior Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Students Engagement, Mr Sunday Asefon, acknowledged the growing level of social vices in tertiary institutions.

He said the committee will need to collaborate with tertiary institutions to strengthen security measures and create an environment that fosters academic excellence and personal growth.

In his acceptance speech, the chairman of the committee, Major General Suleiman Kazaure (retd.), pledged commitment to addressing emerging social vices in tertiary institutions.

He assured that the committee will work to effect an immediate ban on music, movies and content that promote social vices among students and youths, adding that the committee would propose, in consultation with stakeholders, the immediate registration of off-campus hostels accommodating students of tertiary institutions and a mandatory drug test for undergraduate students.
