The Federal Government is set to meet with the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the All-Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools this week to discuss the proposal by the Minister of Education to extend basic education to 12 years.
This comes as the proposal, which aims to integrate junior and senior secondary education into a single continuous programme, has sparked mixed reactions among education stakeholders, with calls for careful deliberation before any decision is made.
Speaking on the development, the National President of All-Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, Mr. Musa Ibrahim, clarified that while the minister had put forward the idea, it had not yet been enacted into law.
Mr. Ibrahim also revealed that the upcoming meeting in Abuja would provide an opportunity for deeper discussions.
Also speaking on the development, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Mr. Audu Amber, stressed the need for further analysis before making any definitive comments.
