The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has directed all state commandants to deploy armed personnel and intelligence officers to custodial centres across the country.
Commandant General of the Corp, Ahmed Audi, who gave the directive said the move is aimed at strengthening security at the facilities, which have been designated as critical national assets, and to prevent potential jailbreaks.
NSCDC Spokesperson, Babawale Afolabi, explained that the action is to complement the efforts of the Nigerian Correctional Centre.
Reports show that Nigeria has witnessed series of jailbreaks across various correctional facilities, resulting in the escape of over 6,000 inmates.
Meanwhile, over two thousand escapees have been rearrested by the Nigerian Correctional Service officers and security agencies while over four thousand are still at large.
