The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, says over sixteen thousand medical doctors have left Nigeria to practice abroad in the last five to seven years.
He stated this in Abuja during the annual capacity-building workshop of the Association of Medical Councils of Africa, hosted by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
The Minister noted that the mass migration of doctors out of the country is driven by factors such as economic opportunities, better working conditions, advanced training, and superior research environments.
He said the government is working towards addressing the maldistribution of the medical workforce, noting that over forty percent of doctors are concentrated in Lagos and Abuja, while many parts of Nigeria remain without adequate medical coverage.
